Surly Brewing Company is looking for a Quality Sensory Assistant to join the Quality team on a part-time basis. This person will help oversee flavor maintenance and development of our products. This is your chance to interact daily with brewers, the folks in packaging, cool kitchen people, and the geeks in the lab. If you like beer and people, you just might be the one we’re looking for.
The Quality Sensory Assistant is responsible for supporting the Quality Department and primarily the Sensory division. The Quality Sensory Assistant will report to the Sensory Coordinator and will help lead panels and trainings. This entry level, part-time position will help with the development of sensory projects including daily release panels, weekly trainings, special projects, and anything else that may be needed by the quality division.
Administering taste panel at the Brooklyn Center production facility as directed by Sensory Coordinator using DraughtLab Pro.
Setting up evaluation space for taste panel.
Preparing taste panel samples using proper lab technique.
Assisting panelists with DraughtLab Pro sensory software and phone application.
Cleaning and polishing all glassware used for taste panel.
Maintaining expected panelist behavior.
Assisting with weekly sensory training led by Sensory Coordinator.
Setting up training space.
Preparing training samples using proper lab technique.
Tear down and clean up of training materials.
Transporting yeast, lab samples, and other materials between production facilities.
Maintaining inventory of sensory supplies and basic housekeeping.
Administering taste panel at the Minneapolis production facility on an as-needed basis.
Attending weekly QAQC meeting.
Supporting the quality department with other related duties as directed by the Sensory Coordinator and QAQC Manager.
Representing Surly in a professional manner.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, and statistical analysis
Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with others
Able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
Clean driving record and ability to drive a sprinter van to various Surly locations around the Twin Cities
Must be at least 21 years old
Some knowledge of the brewing process from grain to glass
