Have a passion for great visual storytelling? The Growler Magazine, a monthly publication dedicated to telling original stories in the realms of food, drink, and culture, is looking for a creative, fun, energetic, craft-minded individual to fill the role of Photo Editor.

Driven by their creative spirit, this person will be tasked with planning, assigning, and curating the visual imagery for The Growler’s online and print publication. The perfect candidate will also have a passion for working within an editorial workflow, and creating and implementing organizational systems and maximizing efficiencies.

This full-time position is perfect for an individual seeking to enter the field of publishing and who thrives in a collaborative and close-knit team environment. The photo editor reports directly to the managing editor.

Job Duties

Your work as photo editor would include, but is not limited to:

  • Acting as a point of contact for freelance photographers and illustrators

  • Issuing photographer and illustrator contracts and organizing paperwork

  • Licensing media materials from other artists, businesses, and publications

  • Helping to curate and define The Growler’s visual impact and identity in coordination with the designer and editorial staff

  • Collaborating with other in-house teams, photographers, designers, and editorial staff to meet online and print publishing deadlines

  • Scheduling and sometimes attending photo shoots

  • Organizing and editing photos in our archives and tagging them to make them searchable and easily accessible

  • Producing original photography for the publication as needed

  • Supporting editorial staff in all activities leading to print publication

  • Uploading images to our website and laying out articles for online publication in a way that extends the Growler’s visual identity to the web

  • Attending and/or covering events on behalf of the business

  • Working all company events in varying capacities

  • Expanding The Growler’s database of freelance photographers and artists

  • Keeping databases, spreadsheets, and other records up to date

  • Maintaining an ongoing understanding of legal issues that impact our business, such as intellectual property and privacy

  • Assisting in the production of newsletters and other company communications

  • Routine administrative tasks

  • Deliveries and general errands

Required Skills

  • Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Visual Arts, or a related field, or experiential equivalent

  • 2+ years of photography experience in an editorial, commercial, or freelance capacity. Established portfolio a plus, but not required

  • Excellent research and writing skills including:

  • Ability to write in a clear, concise, and engaging way

  • Excellent understanding of grammar, punctuation, and spelling

  • Word processing and spreadsheets

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, and InCopy

  • Creative thinking and profound curiosity

  • Passion for telling stories through visual art

  • Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills

  • Understanding of legal issues, such as intellectual property and privacy

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines

Preferred Experience

  • Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, etc.

  • Wordpress


  • Audio and/or video production and editing

  • MailChimp or similar electronic communication services
