Quality Sensory Technician: Surly Brewing Co.

The Quality Sensory Technician is responsible for supporting the sensory division of the quality program. The sensory technician reports to the Sensory Coordinator and helps administer taste panel and weekly sensory training. This part-time position will help with the development of sensory projects including daily release panels, weekly training, and special projects.


  • Administering taste panel at the Brooklyn Center production facility as directed by Sensory Coordinator using DraughtLab Pro.

    • Setting up evaluation space for taste panel

    • Preparing taste panel samples using proper lab technique

    • Assisting panelists with DraughtLab Pro sensory software and phone application

    • Cleaning and polishing all glassware used for taste panel

    • Maintaining expected panelist behavior

  • Assisting with weekly sensory training led by Sensory Coordinator.

    • Setting up training space.

    • Preparing training samples using proper lab technique.

    • Tear down and clean up of training materials.

  • Transporting yeast, lab samples, and other materials between production facilities.

  • Maintaining inventory of sensory supplies and basic housekeeping.

  • Administering taste panel at the Minneapolis production facility on an as-needed basis.

  • Attending weekly QAQC meeting.

  • Supporting the quality department with other related duties as directed by the Sensory Coordinator and QAQC Manager.

  • Schedule:

    • Monday 8AM-2PM

    • Tuesday 8AM-5PM

    • Wednesday 8AM-2PM

    • Thursday 8AM-2PM


  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, and statistical analysis

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with others


  • Bachelor’s Degree (Food Science, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry)

  • Knowledge of the brewing process from grain to glass

  • Experience with sensory technique and evaluation
