Payroll & Benefits Specialist: Surly Brewing Co.


  • Responsible for biweekly payroll processing for all staff, ensuring accuracy of all wage calculations, withholdings, deductions, and any personnel changes that may have occurred.

  • Ensures compliance and maintains up to date knowledge of all applicable local, state and federal wage and hour laws.

  • Work with Human Resources team members to verify that new hires, leaves, terminations and pay adjustments are accurate. Verify that direct deposit, tax withholding, and wage garnishments are accurate.

  • Plan and implement payroll procedures in line with company and department objectives

  • Assist HR Generalist with monthly benefits reconciliation.

  • Responsible for administration of the Surly Brewing 401k Plan

  • Maintain the HCM Solution (UltiPro); identify and resolve issues related to software or vendor data feeds.

  • Communicate with managers regarding timekeeping approval and general UltiPro support

  • Respond to employee inquiries and resolve issues related to payroll, time and attendance, benefits, etc.

  • Prepare census data for employee benefits plans and other reports for Human Resources, Accounting, internal/external auditors.

  • Prepare hours reports for ACA Measurement periods for management

  • Reviews Year-end reports and works with vendors/ appropriate parties to submit any necessary corrections in a timely manner.

  • Evaluate current processes and systems and make recommendations for continuous improvements.

  • Assist HR staff with Open Enrollment and other benefits tasks as needed

  • Partner with brokers, vendors, and other third parties in administration of employee benefit programs and systems.


  • Bachelor’s degree required; three to five years of payroll processing, and reporting experience required; or combination of education and experience

  • Experience processing payroll in UltiPro required

  • Experience with Human Resources processes and benefits administration required, including account reconciliations and reporting

  • Experience with data analysis and auditing procedures, Excel knowledge required

  • Hospitality Experience required

  • Small and large company work experience required

  • Current knowledge of FLSA, other local, state, and federal regulations required.

  • Works courteously and professionally with all vendors and co-workers. Calmly and tactfully manages difficult or emotional employee/vendor situations



  • CPP strongly preferred 

  • Knowledge of basic economic and accounting principles and practices

  • Bilingual English/Spanish helpful



  • This position has no direct reports; however, the Payroll & Benefits Specialist is expected to adhere to and support the Words to Drink By 2.0: Manager Code of Conduct and follow the managerial decision-making process.



  • This position operates around a ‘mostly’ traditional schedule in an office environment, but can require long hours and evening/weekend work when the demand calls for it. Participation at relevant brewery and other company events is assumed.
